A Fresh Start After Years of Teeth Grinding – A Patient Review

When patients take the time to share their stories, we always stop and listen. Watch this patient video and learn about one patient’s journey to a fresh start. For years, Jen lived with something she did not fully realize was affecting her smile, her bite, and the way her jaw felt every day.

Jen had been grinding her teeth since childhood. By her early fifties, decades of wear had changed the height and shape of her teeth. She also began noticing jaw soreness and sensitivity in certain areas. What she did not expect was how much better things could feel once the bigger picture was addressed. “The treatment has totally changed my life,” Jen shares in this month’s patient video. “It’s changed my smile.”

When Teeth Grinding Adds Up Over Time

Teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, often happens unconsciously, particularly during sleep. Bruxism can lead to a variety of oral health complications. For Jen, the effects accumulated gradually. She learned that she had lost a significant amount of tooth height over the years. As her teeth became shorter, her bite changed too. She had also grown accustomed to tension in her jaw. “I didn’t even realize just how much tension I had always held in my jaw,” she explains.

That is one of the interesting things about slowly developing dental problems. When changes happen over many years, patients may adjust to them without realizing how different things have become.

Looking Beyond a Single Tooth

Jen’s concerns were not limited to one damaged tooth or one old restoration. Her teeth, bite, jaw, and existing dental work all needed to be considered together. Her treatment involved a full mouth rehabilitation. Existing crowns and bridges were replaced, and new crowns were used throughout her mouth to restore the height, shape, color, and overall appearance of her teeth.

Dental crowns are part of the restorative care offered at Kissimmee Family Dentistry, and the practice uses digital technology such as the iTero intraoral scanner to obtain accurate scans for crowns and bridges. In Jen’s case, treatment planning also focused on restoring her vertical dimension, essentially rebuilding the height that had been lost through years of grinding.

Function and Appearance Belong Together

One of the most meaningful parts of Jen’s story is that her treatment was never just about making her teeth look different. Her worn teeth had affected the way her bite functioned and contributed to strain in her jaw. Restoring their height was intended to improve the relationship between the teeth, muscles, and joints while also creating a more harmonious smile.

At the same time, appearance mattered to Jen.

She describes her new smile as more positive and says the change has made her feel “royal and beautiful.” That combination reflects an important part of restorative dentistry. A successful result can support function while also helping a patient feel more comfortable and confident with the way their smile looks.

Planning for the Next Season of Life

At 50, Jen was thinking about what the years ahead might look like. Before treatment, she worried that continued dental problems could eventually lead to losing more teeth or needing dentures. After completing her full mouth rehabilitation, she describes the experience very differently. “I have a whole new fresh start in my mouth,” she says. That feeling of a fresh start may be the most powerful part of her story.

Jen isn’t simply happy with how her teeth look today. She feels more optimistic about moving into the next stage of her life with a smile that feels stronger, more comfortable, and more like her again.

Confidence That Goes Beyond the Smile

Jen puts it beautifully when she says, “Your smile, it’s how you meet the world.” Dental treatment can be clinical, but the reasons people choose to move forward with it are often deeply personal.

Being able to smile without hesitation, feel more comfortable in your own face, or stop worrying about what may happen to your teeth in the future can influence everyday confidence in ways that are difficult to measure. Jen says she trusted her instincts when she chose to move forward with treatment, and now, looking back, she knows she made the right decision.
