No one wants cavities. That said, if you have an especially sugary diet or are still learning to brush and floss properly, it can sometimes be difficult to prevent them.
Why Dental Sealants?
Sealants prevent 80% of cavities for up to two years after application. It’s still important to brush and floss regularly, both to prevent cavities on the rest of your teeth, and also because sealant effectiveness diminishes over time. This treatment is a great solution for people who want extra protection or children who are still learning the best way to take care of their teeth
Both adults and children can benefit from sealants:
Younger patients are still learning to brush and floss, which means they need extra protection.
Adult patients who have had issues with cavities in the past can use sealants as an added layer of defense. It is important to note that sealants cannot be applied over fillings.
What to Expect from Dental Sealants
You can eat or drink normally with sealants. Immediately after the procedure, though, we recommend avoiding food that is particularly chewy, hard, or sticky. We also recommend that patients don’t chew ice, which is as bad for your sealants as it is bad for your teeth in general.
Once you have sealants, we’ll check them during your regular dental cleanings. Even up to four years after they’re applied, sealants are 50% effective. At this point, we recommend getting them replaced.
